The Gloucester Methodist Circuit
Free Awareness evening with local experts.
Tuesday 15th July 08
7pm to 9pm
"Currently around 8,000 cases of Alzheimer's disease are diagnosed each year in Gloucestershire. The Alzheimer's Society anticipate that over the next few years the number could almost double, increasing to 15,000 cases".
That's the stark message from Mike Haines, the organiser of an "Alzheimer's and Dementia Awareness Evening" on Tuesday 15th July starting at 7pm at Lonsdale Road Methodist Church, off Elmbridge Road, in Gloucester.
Speakers include: Ann Carter from the Gloucester Branch of the Alzheimer's Society; Jan Furniaux, Community Service Manager 2gether NHS Foundation Trust and Gloucester GP Bob Paterson.
There are over 100 types of dementia. The most common are Alzheimer's, vascular dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies. Symptoms include loss of memory, confusion and problems with speech and understanding.
Mike says, " Many of us are frightened to talk about this disease. Yet when it happens to a member of our family or someone close to us, its knowing where we can get information and help from. So we hope this evening will help us to be a bit more informed. Questions like "How to recognise the symptoms". "What to do when Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia are diagnosed". And other practical concerns like "Where to get help, advice and support". All very important. The panel will be on hand to answer general questions, so have a think and come along. It's entirely free, there's no charge. You can also make a donation to the Alzheimer's Society if you wish".
